Introducing Passkeys: A More Secure Way to Sign In to apps and websites on Apple Devices

Apple is revolutionizing user authentication with the introduction of passkeys for iPhone and other Apple devices. Passkeys provide a higher level of security and reliability compared to traditional passwords.

Passkeys offer a unique advantage in security. Each passkey is generated uniquely for every account, greatly reducing the risk of phishing attacks. Furthermore, it seamlessly functions across all Apple devices linked to the same Apple ID.

Much like passwords, passkeys are encrypted and securely stored in users’ iCloud Keychain. They remain invisible to everyone, including Apple, ensuring maximum confidentiality.

To experience this enhanced security feature, users will need devices running iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS 13, and tvOS 16 or later versions. Additionally, iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication must be enabled.

Here’s a simple guide to setting up your passkey:

  1. Visit a supported application or website on your Apple device.
  2. If you have an existing account, log in and navigate to the account settings or management section. For new accounts, follow the steps to create one.
  3. When prompted to save your passkey, select ‘Continue’. Your passkey will be stored in the “Passwords” menu within “Settings”.

Should you ever need to change your passkey for any reason, simply create a new one to replace the previous version.
